About
Born in Edinburgh from a family tradition of Scottish painters, dating back to James Cumming (1732-1793). Following a career in nursing, Ann studied painting and drawing for several years with her uncle, Albert Cummings (neo-classical painter and senior picture restorer to Scottish Heritage), who has been her mentor and great source of knowledge. She also completed a further two years of study at Stamford College, Lincolnshire.
Ann’s preferred medium is oil but she is also experienced in working with pastel and egg tempera. Her method of painting is to make small studies plein air to try and evoke an expression of the atmosphere of the subject, returning to her studio to work up her studies into larger paintings, which can often take many months to complete. Her paintings are in collections worldwide.
